A Few Time Saving and Efficiency Tips

Domains $7.49 - Why Pay More?As we all know things can get pretty busy at times, and it helps to be able to sort through things more efficiently for obvious reasons. I have compiled a list of some of the most handy improvements I have found and I think that many of them will be able to be used by other departments as well.

Are you getting locked out everytime you change your password on the network or frequently have login problems? Consider hotkeying your passwords, this has the same effect as saving them in the standard text file that they give you in training but allows you to use key terms to enter the password more quickly. You might use something such as yahoopass for the hotkey to enter the password for your yahoo password. This would print the password so that anytime it changes, you simply update your hotkey, no new password to remember!

Bookmarks Toolbar: This comes default on mine and allows me to have a toolbar where I can save important information such as tickets for later, without having to keep them open (hint hint) however it’s easy to forget that it’s there because it doesn’t look like a firefox tab, so I found an improvement and now I use both.

TooManyTabs (Firefox Addon) TooManyTabs allows you to store as many tabs as you like by adding extra rows in the toolbar with a dropdown. I use this to keep track of tickets that I want to call at a certain time, keep all of the many thousand and one gator tools that we use bookmarked, and also to save things for later to research in more detail. The major benefit of using this plugin is that it allows you to have what appears to be an open tab, and works essentially as one, but it is really just a fancy sort of bookmark so you are not using the resources of having the tab open.

ChromaTabs Plus (Firefox Addon) I know some of you also suffer ADD moments and probably can’t find the tabs you are looking for quickly and efficiently, so I use this tab to automatically color my tabs so that they are easy to differentiate which system they are because this handy addon colors them according to the favicon color. This allows you to save a little bit of time scanning your tabs for which ones you need when your working on complex issues that require many tabs at once.

Group / Sort Tabs (Firefox Addon) I’m a little partial to this one because it interupts me when I open a new window for each issue I am working on, but never-the-less it is very handy and adds additional sorting options to firefox so that you don’t have to arrange your tabs, for example you can set it so that it sorts all of your tabs for the each project next to each other automatically. But if you open a new task in the same window, the downside is that it will automatically put it in the same location making it difficult to find. So just remember to open a new window if you use this addon.

Tab Kit – Tab grouping, vertical tab tree, multi-rows, and other tab tweaks for firefox. I use this to put my tabs on the left hand side of firefox. This allows me to keep my tabs on the left, innactive tabs from TooManyTabs on the top, and other sidebar windows on the right making the most use of the little bit of space that we have on the page. This allows you to open up many more tabs in the same window and still be able to clearly see the title for faster observation.

Tab Alarm – I haven’t found a practical use for this because it doesn’t seem to have a popup or anything that notifies you of the new tab, it just seems to open it discreetly which makes it a lot less effective for the purposes I needed it for, however someone may find it useful.

HideTab – I use this addon to hide my Pandora tab so that I don’t accidentally click it while working on issues and wasting a few seconds each time it happens.

WorldIP – Worldwide ping and traceroute. Shows flag, country, provider, datacenter, reverse DNS, IP address of the current page and your IP and more in the status bar at the bottom of firefox.
