My question is about my nine year old cat’s nutrition. I feed her Science Diet dry food,…
We do periodically hear from consumers that their veterinarians have warned them not to feed fish to cats. What they are warning against is the consistent feeding of fish prepared for human consumption, such as canned tuna or fresh shrimp. The feeding of small quantities of fish in addition to the consumption of a complete and balanced diet (commercial wet or dry pet foods) as part of a complete and balanced diet will not be harmful to your cat as long as the fish has been cooked in some way. It is recommended that raw fish not be fed to your cat. You must be careful not to cause any nutritional imbalances by feeding too much of something that is not complete and balanced (treats). If cooked fish is offered as a treat, no more than 10% of the cat’s calories should come from the “treat.” When fish is incorporated into a pet food, it is carefully balanced with other ingredients to ensure that your cat receives the appropriate levels of protein, fat, vitamins and minerals. This provides your cats with the flavor of fish they love, without upsetting their nutritional balance.
