Together Again

Merlin Nara are brother and sister. They were adopted from our local SPCA shelter in September 2007. My nephew, M— and his fiancé went to the shelter on Sunday just to look at what black male kittens were available, and ended up falling in love with two of the black kittens, a male and a female. Neither of them could bear to leave either kitten behind, but A—, M—‘s mother and my sister, had agreed only to adopting one male kitten. Since they didn’t want to take the chance that someone else might adopt him before they could get back, they brought the male home with them that night and named him Merlin. M— told us that night that the choice was difficult as there were three black kittens in the litter and there was a female there also that was just so cute! The little female came up to the window next to the male that they were looking at and caught both M— and his fiancé’s attention. That was on Sunday night. By Monday night, we realized that something was not quite right with Merlin; he seemed sad. He was only three months old at the time and we knew he was probably lonely for his mother and his littermates. M— reminded A— about the two other black kittens in the litter and, though neither A— nor I looked forward to the prospect of the added responsibility of a second cat (since don’t we all know who the responsibility of caring for pets usually ends up falling onto, lol), it was agreed that M— A— would go back to the shelter just to see if the two other black kittens were still there. After all, A— reminded M— that they may have already been adopted by the time they got there and not to get his hopes up. It was late on Wednesday when they got to the shelter and it was going to close soon thereafter, but when M— A— saw the little female they were BOTH goners. She was laying in the very back of the cubicle and didn’t come up to the window meowing and vie for attention when the rest of the litter did. She just lay in the back with her head down on her paws and stayed there. She lifted her head up slightly, looked directly into A—rsquo;s eyes, mewed softly and then put her little head back down. Well, that was it! They fell in love with her immediately. When M— told about how the female stayed close to Merlin’s side when he was there the past Sunday, they both knew that she was behaving that way because she was depressed and going through separation anxiety at being separated from her brother. It was obvious that adopting her also was the right thing to do. A— pointed to her and said, “We want that one.” When the staff member, D—, handed the kitten to A—, A— said that the song “Nara” immediately came into her mind and so that’s where Nara gets her name. *Smiles* It was late, though, and D— said they would have to come back the next day. A— was crushed that they couldn’t bring Nara home that night and when the staff saw her reaction to the news, and considering that we had adopted Nora’s brother just two days before, all of them generously agreed to stay late, past their usual closing time, to get all the paperwork and processing done so that A— and M— could take Nara with them that night. Nara, though curled up in a ball in the corner of the box the whole way home, cried all the way in that pitiful little cry that kittens make for the 40-minute drive. When they got home and took her out of the carry box that the shelter gave them, Nara was still crying and scared, not knowing what was going on and where she was being taken. But when she saw Merlin sitting in the middle of the room, she took one look at him stopped her crying. Merlin saw Nara and, watching patiently, waited for her to see him and calm down. When she did, the two of them simultaneously bounded across the room at each other and began playing together. It was such a joyous sight! Nara was so happy to be back with her brother and Merlin, who I’m sure is the elder of the two judging from his behavior with her, lol, is equally happy to have his sister with him. The two are like peas in a pod. They do everything together from eating, playing making mischief to napping and simply sitting by the window looking at the great outdoors. They even use the litter box together! ROFL Though we originally intended to adopt only one kitten, we will never regret adopting two, especially when they are from the same litter. The bond of family that ties Merlin and Nara together is every bit as great, strong and powerful as any family ties that we humans experience. Don’t ever let anyone tell you otherwise. To D— and the entire staff at the SPCA: Thank you! For all that you did for my family and for all that you do for the animals in your care. *Smiles* ~Angie 0:)
